Catch-Up #31: A Disjointed Roundup

Am I nearly a month behind and therefore missed a post for the first time in over year? Maybe… maybe…

Look, I could explain it to you, but I exist in vague details and opinions here on the blog so lets go with something a little honest and then a disguised lie. As, okay, I did forget, initially. I got my dates all mixed up after the Bobby post and I thought the next post was due the following weekend when it was actually due that weekend, and then the following weekend I was so exceedingly busy with other more pressing writing tasks I couldn’t begin to describe you I very much did not have the time to set aside a few hours to write a post. Now, admittedly, once that work was done I had some spare time, but I was already two weeks late so what was the point? Then this weekend I was busy travelling and could not write.

All that said, even if I were to sit down and write I do not truly know what I would write about, but I now have way more free time than usual so I may as well write something, right?

I do not intend for the posts to stay missed so I am going to make them up with some posts on a weekly basis where possible so I don’t fall short of the expected count at the end of the year.

That said, I have about a months worth of viewing I could talk about so lets do a slightly different to the usual disjointed roundup. Okay?

Where Am I? What Have I Been Watching?

The answer is a little convoluted so bare with.

Firstly, The Handmaid’s Tale, as mentioned. I stopped on the finale of Season 2, though, because I remember the seasons cliffhanger and I knew I was going to be very busy for the next few weeks. Best to save my brain I thought. I haven’t picked it back up again yet, though, and Season 6 has started airing where I am, so I really bloody need to. That is on the list. Finished before the finale drops would be a preferable outcome but I’m not going to hold my breath to it.

That said, Season 2 has remained one of my favourite seasons of the show. It’s beautifully tragic and so well executed. The show really is at it’s pique when playing with the dynamics between June and the Waterford’s. So while the show isn’t the easiest to stomach – if you’re in a bad place already it’s certainly not a show you should jump to engage with – comparatively, on it’s own scale, it is enjoyable in it’s own context. Season 2, in my opinion, is one of it’s best. Season 3 is okay and a bit of a hurdle towards Season 4, which I remember liking last time I watched. You’ll hear more when I finally watch it.

Secondly, NCIS (again). It had really been over a year since I was last watching this (I checked) and being already ten seasons in and twelve to go I wasn’t about to restart it and just hoped I remembered what was happening – Spoiler, I didn’t – This would’ve probably been easier if i’d procrastinated finishing the story at literally any other part of the story, however I had taken a break midway through Ziva’s grief arc at the end of Season 10 – as said, procrastinating, so I didn’t have to watch her leave – this was a mistake. It’s whatever, though, because the recaps almost covered enough for me to remember what the hell was happening through some mild confusion and I pressed on. There is a spin-off coming! With my current trends I did not have the time to start from the top again.

This all said, I have now watched two full seasons and I’m on early Season 13. Ziva is gone, Ellie has joined us and Tony is on a self-reflective growth kick. Oh, and also the introduction of Delilah. I remembered liking her so I was excited to see her joining the swath of reoccurring characters the show has and name drops as often as possible. Did not realised they paralysed her so soon after her introduction, and that she saw so little of Ziva, but alas.

For me, NCIS is a classic, so I am vibing with this. I was watching it semi-casually over dinner, between bouts of work just to take a breather. It was all working out and I enjoy it. I just need to carry on with it. There are minimum bench marks I need to hit before NCIS: Tony and Ziva comes out, and while I am not holding my breath for it to actually drop in the fall in the UK – we’re probably looking at more like January 2026 but you never know – I would like to be caught up by then anyways. If only because, did you see The Trailer??? It’s giving limited series, but I will take literally anything because it looks awesome, I have missed them and I adore them.

Okay so that covers the basics. Those two have actually been watched watched, as it were. Everything else I’ve dived into has been noise while I did other things, grossly unfinished and/or something that at this time I just could not get myself into. So let’s list those quick, okay?

Firstly, background noise:

You, because everyone seems to love it and it’s on its last season, right? Regardless I managed a season and a half as I let it play while I was busy with other definitely important things. It’s interesting enough, I guess. I intend to finish at least Season 2 because I happen to be a fan of Jenna Ortega and her work.

Death Note. I don’t know, dude, I think I was bored of You and I exist on the internet. I saw it get mentioned a few times, a tumblr post here or there, and I was curious. I didn’t search it out, I just saw it on Netflix and shrugged. I needed background noise. It’s not bad, actually. Not my usual thing, sure, but I don’t dislike it and as such I think I intend to finish it, even if still as background noise.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The first season is so cheesy it makes perfect background noise. Don’t knock it, Buffy is a masterpiece and I am quite aware I’ve watched it pretty recently but when you’re not really in the mood for anything and just need something to fill the silence, it works pretty well. I did not watch a lot, if you could say I was even watching it, but it was enjoyable.

The half-finished messes:

Nurse Jackie. I started it with my partner one night. We haven’t watched a lot. I must confess I then watched a few episodes without them. Only like up to Episode 6 or something I can’t remember. I know, I’m the worst. Only watched it because I’d seen clips of it online, and once again, I was curious. Also, I had recently subscribed to Paramount+ for reasons we will get into and to my surprise it was there! It also took me several episodes to realise they were only 20-30 minute episodes. Suppose I expected them to be like Grey’s Anatomy episodes and I had been watching a lot of NCIS, with their 45 minute episodes. I thought they were going by fast. Whatever, though, it’s interesting enough, might finish it.

School Spirits. Literally the entire reason I got Paramount+. I just haven’t got into it. Look, I have watched Season 1. I had Paramount for a little way back when it first came out. It was interesting and I was excited for Season 2. For whatever reason, though, I have not sat and finished the 2 seasons. Give me the month, though, I’m going to do it. I intend to.

I have made it through Season 1 once more, at the time of writing. As I wrote this post over a few days, I did watch some between working on it, and I am now part way through Season 2. I am enjoying it but I’m going to save comments for the next post because this one is long enough. Season 1 was as enjoyable as I remembered, though. It’s a ghost-y murder mystery essentially. It’s not overly dark about it, having humour where it can fit, and some oddly chill vibes with the ghosts. While also being as dramatic and chilling as it needs to be when the time arrives. It’s well balanced I like the way this universes ghosts are set up, it leads to some interesting things, with them being able to interact with the world but not effect it. It allows them certain ‘way’s of life’, I suppose. The best you can have in death.

Dexter: Original Sin. Do I have to spell out that I started this simply because of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s role in the series? I think that’s pretty evident, right? If you read any of my Buffy the Vampire Slayer posts. I have not watched beyond the pilot of either the original Dexter, or currently this spin off. I don’t intend to watch Dexter any time soon but I do intend to finish Original Sin, ya know… for the plot.

Yellowjackets. One episode and therefore, obviously, far from finished. Not even halfway. Really I put it on simply because of the hype I saw it getting online. That’s about it. It’s okay. Maybe I’ll finish it. I’m going to safely assume I need to get further into the series to form any of sort of opinion, so bare with on that one.

The Weekly’s:

You know the deal with this now. Short and sweet this time because there’s only a few to keep up on.

Of course, 9-1-1. The season finale is just around the corner at the end of this week, and the trailer doesn’t have me overly excited. Of course, by the time this is published it will be out, but as of writing I haven’t watched it yet. That funeral, though, shall we talk about that? Tears, weeping, oh my god.

Look, your opinions on Bobby’s death aside – it was dumb and they shouldn’t have done it – the following episodes have been salvaging it as much as possible. It’s important to think about them together. The cast is so large, they don’t have the time to explore everyone’s grief effectively in 42 minutes so you have to let them cook over the whole few episodes and I’m sure they’re not done with it yet. There’s one more episode to go. My point is, ‘Don’t Drink the Water’ felt like it filled in the gaps ‘The Last Alarm’ left. Buck’s grief fell short in Episode 16 but was given place in Episode 17, and the Eddie scenes we’d missed were shown in that episode, it all comes together. Ya know? Let them cook, is my point.

I was ready to give up on them a month ago, almost, and now I’m not so sure. ‘Lab Rats’ didn’t need to kill Bobby, it didn’t, and I’m still mad and wish they’d undo it and I refuse to admit he’s dead. No corpse, no death, c’mon now. However, the episodes following his death have been doing all they can to earn it, to make it worth it, and recover from it. The episodes, if not for Bobby’s death, have been good in my opinion. I’m still frustrated and killing someone for ‘realism’ is not a good enough reason to do it and doesn’t make the death earned. They’ve brought me to many tears though and I don’t think the episodes are bad out of context.

Also, really quickly, Doctor Who. Finally sat down and watched the new season episodes and ya know what, I don’t hate them. I found the last season dissappointing and underwhelming, as you might remember. Right now, though, I think they’re doing okay. I’ll let them finish, though, not get my hopes too high up. I have only one request from the season: Who in the f*** is Mrs Flood?

To Conclude

Okay, that covers it, I think. Everything mentioned and detailed. I can’t say how interesting I expect this post to have been. It’s a catch up for the sake of literally catching up with the posts I’ve missed. You’re used to how catch-up posts tend to work now, though, and I don’t think this is particularly different.

I will say this, though. I have plans, I always have plans and I have mentioned plans before that have evidently gone nowhere, but I have plans and I have time. Hopefully, quite a bit of time, and I intend to get a few posts written and scheduled. I won’t just dedicate all my time to the blog, I have other writing projects to do as well as life stuff, but I have plans for posts. Lots of them in my drafts, ready to be typed, edited and posted. Bare with, I promise nothing but I have hopes.

Well, as always, I hope you enjoyed reading whatever this was, and it’s always nice to catch-up and keep this going. More to come and hope you’ll tune in again for the next one. Thank you for reading this far.

In the mean time, as always:
