Catch-Up #22: Chinatown, Murders and First Responders

Late. I know. I’m working on it. Moving on. Here’s the week in review, Catch-Up as per.

As always, check the tags.

SPOILERS AHEAD

First off this week, let’s talk about Chinatown.

Interior Chinatown

Firstly: Did I watch this because of Chloe Bennet? Yes, 100%, will be doing so again.

Secondly: Was it worth it? Yes.

As shows go, Interior Chinatown is sort of hard to summarise, though I am sure I will have to attempt to do so in the future. The point is, this is a damn good show and while I can’t currently find the words to sing it’s praise, I very much do recommend you add this little wonder of a show to your watchlist and give it a watch at the earliest moment you get.

Then, when you do sit down to put it on, give it a chance. It will amaze you, but like all good things, you need to learn to savour it first and let it surprise you. Let it become something, nothing begins perfect. Perfection takes much needed time.

Though, as beginnings go, I’d say it has a pretty good opener overall.

Interior Chinatown is one of those shows in which when it starts to develop you can sense at that moment that you’re going to need more than one watch to fully understand what you’re watching and appreciate it in all it’s stunning glory. I have not gotten around to watch number two, so I will reserve some comments for when that does occur, but for now, let us start with the obvious opinions.

I adored this show.

Chloe Bennet may have been factor one, and I will watch her in literally anything. This should’ve been clear. Don’t judge. Daisy Johnson forever. However, there are other factors. Besides her entire amazing presence, because in spite of my obvious bias she does deliver one hell of a performance in this show, besides which this show is just kind of my whole vibe.

It’s Crime Dramas, which I love, and then with this odd supernatural twist, and it is meta in all the best ways. A show that is self aware, but not just for kicks, it’s plot relevant. It’s The Truman Show, Scream and WandaVision elements all wrapped up into one, and you’re going to have to watch all four of those to understand what I mean by that.

This show is a brilliant piece of art, and I have bought the book.

Go watch it and listen to everything it has to say, because it matters.

Murders: Body of Proof

I think I’ve mentioned Body of Proof before but we’ve never fully discussed it because I never finished it.

I have now finished it.

It had less than 50 Episodes, and for me that is a quick watch. I think it took me like a week after finishing Interior Chinatown in two days.

I have to say, I quite enjoyed it. It has pleasant vibes for a Crime Drama, at least to begin with. I like the premise and dynamics. Megan Hunt is a fun character, in the sense that she is interesting to follow, and I was quite attached by the end. Quite honestly, it’s a lovely show. An easy watch, if anything else, at least by Crime Drama standards. So, I had fun.

I did get about halfway through and start to get this feeling that it stank of a premature cancellation and would not have some grand finale or satisfying conclusion.

I feel I was mostly right in this assumption.

Season 3 wreaks of massive behind the scenes changes, and while the show doesn’t really suffer for it, the shift is more than noticeable in more than just the cast changes. Structure, dynamic and even lighting has changed and you can tell.

It’s not a bad change, but they do certainly raise the stakes for no particularly noticeable reason.

I figured Peter and Megan were a ‘will they/won’t they’ of a friendship on the subtler side, and then Peter gets replaced with Tommy and the show loses all definition of subtlety. I don’t hate them, though. They were sweet. I was quite pleased they kissed. Less pleased about what happened to Peter.

Speaking of, that is the exact kind of kiss ending I was expecting. Don’t ‘will they/won’t they’ and then make me imagine a happy ending. Come on, now. I don’t watch for the kiss. I watch for everything after.

Still, at least it wasn’t a cliffhanger ending, which I was mildly scared of. They didn’t really leave any unanswered questions, not any that mattered anyways. It was A Ending. Which in spite of, I would still recommend you go watch Body of Proof because it’s very pleasant and I very much enjoyed it. Low-key, would watch it again right now.

Finally, First Responders: 9-1-1

We have been here before! My opinions on the show discussed and spoken about greatly.

I love this show, mistakes and all, and they’ve made a few – If I could glare at some writers, I would – but they’ve done an overall absolutely brilliant job with this show. A weak season or episode should not reflect on the whole show, which is largely of a very high quality and uses it’s platform to tell some very important stories.

Besides, far as I can tell from the internet available ratings it’s doing pretty well.

And did you see The Promo???

Yes, The Promo is why I’m watching it again.

As this past week I did not just decide it was finally time I watched the new season, which can only improve on the somewhat disappointing Season 7, but I started the show again. Which, to be clear, by that I mean I totally skipped Season 1, because I really couldn’t care less for a season without Maddie, never mind the fact Season 1 is really not their strongest season overall.

That’s a lot of complaining for a show I really like, isn’t it? There will be more, all said with love. Speaking of, on to the love.

I am on Season 4 currently, having absolutely loved Season 2-3 (again). Mildly dreading Season 5, and we all know why. I have a Maddie bias, and her absence is figuratively physically painful. At least Episode 512: “Boston” is one of the best Madney episodes in existence.

They’re a little awkward after it (to my recollection), and Maddie has been criminally underused since. Hopefully this Promo spells well for use of her (if not for her). They have an absolutely stellar actress in Jennifer Love Hewitt and a great character in Maddie at their disposal and they have not been making use of either for the last few seasons. Come on, guys! She is literally RIGHT THERE.

Stop wasting infinite potential now. Having favourites is one thing, but c’mon.

Irregardless! Rewatching has me falling harder in love with Madney, they are adorable and I kind of love everything about them. Ups and downs included, nothing wasted with those two.

Except their wedding, who approved that episode? Because I want to have words.

In theory it was brilliant, very well executed, written and not uninteresting. There is a nice parallel to their first kiss occurring, which I like. However, in practice, I’m not pleased.

Still, early seasons Madney! Absolutely lovely and I love them. My poor friend has been hearing about them and their accompanying trauma for the last week. Sorry. I have thoughts. Perhaps they’ll earn a post in their own right one of these days.

Nevertheless! Watch 9-1-1.

I’m approaching Season 8 ever so carefully, all of which will have dropped in my location by the time I get to it. Upon reaching it I will watch it cautiously and with love. I have seen some spoilers, and I am excited (for the most part).

Now, excuse me while I prepare myself to repeat this again in March. Can’t believe we have to wait that long with That Promo playing a haunting loop in our heads.

To Conclude

Late again! I know. I’m working on it. I am so busy, and so stuck. Time is hard to find, and something I want to say is occasionally more elusive.

Nevertheless, I can accept late, but I have not missed one yet, and I refuse to.

With that said, time allowing you’ll hear from me this weekend, and if not then, the weekend after that.

Until then, feel free to leave a comment or send me a DM on socials.
